"Duo land gold with design at show"
Diamond Valley News, April 21, 1999, by Anthony Dowsley

Hurstbridge designers, Melissa Thomas and Liz Nettleton have taken the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show by storm.  The pair's cutting edge design - Reflections of a Desert Moon - on show at the Royal Exhibition Buildings, collected gold for best landscape and design.

Ms Thomas who began her business, Natural Inspirations in Plenty six months ago, said the response to the water landscape display had been overwhelming.  The 27-year-old fused her skills in painting and industrial metal sculpture to make the feature piece in the display.  Her wrought iron and glass pieces, Tear Drop and Parisian Moon, made specifically for the show which ended last week portray a mirror image of moon over water.

Ms Nettleton's contribution was a striking display of plaster moons suspended by rods over water.  Both women worked for three months on the rooftop display.  Ms Thomas said Tear Drop was designed as a mirror image of several moons while Parisian Moon was a table and chairs setting with a "Paris Feel", featuring a romantic moon-shaped glass top.

"I treat my welder as my paint brush, " she said, "I see the pieces as both art and practical, comfortable furniture, but I don't want to mass produce them".  Her other creations include birdbaths, water fountains, wine racks, garden ornaments and garden furniture.

Ms Nettleton, who switched to working with plaster after developing repetitive strain injury from tapestry weaving, has won a following for her sculptured environmental forms.

Local Hurstbridge artist, Melissa Thomas, has won gold at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show held in April.

Four people were involved in the creation of the award winning design, including Roni Nettleton of Living Exteriors and Ms Thomas.

They were presented with the gold medal for Best Landscaping during the opening ceremony of the flower show on April 14.

Natural Inspirations is the name of the business owned and operated by Ms Thomas which began just six months ago.  Ms Thomas contributed two pieces to the contemporary landscape, which was entitled, "Reflections of a Desert Moon".  Her "Tear Drop" contribution was the featured piece of the roof top, designed to portray the mirror image of several moons over the horizon of an endless sea.
